Are VCD or SAIF files mandatory inputs to place and route?

From PDVerse PnR Interview Handbook, part of the pdVerse Mentor Guide

Short Answer

Switching-activity files are conditional, not mandatory — you can import and place a design without them, but you lose accuracy on anything activity-dependent, mainly dynamic power estimation and optimization. Dynamic power depends on how often a node switches, its capacitance, supply voltage, and frequency; VCD records every value change over time while SAIF summarizes activity over an interval — either way, the tool still has to successfully map that recorded activity onto the implemented netlist.

Technical Explanation

  • Switching-activity files are conditional, not mandatory — you can import and place a design without them, but you lose accuracy on anything activity-dependent, mainly dynamic power estimation and optimization.
  • Dynamic power depends on how often a node switches, its capacitance, supply voltage, and frequency; VCD records every value change over time while SAIF summarizes activity over an interval — either way, the tool still has to successfully map that recorded activity onto the implemented netlist.
  • That mapping can silently fail in places: hierarchy changes, synthesis transformations, and naming mismatches can all leave chunks of logic stuck on default activity assumptions even when the file "loads fine."
  • The workload you simulate matters just as much as file coverage — a testbench that mostly holds reset low, or never exercises the datapath, produces unrealistically low activity even with perfect name mapping. Choose representative modes and active intervals, keep leakage conceptually separate from dynamic power (a low-toggle design still burns leakage), and when no representative activity exists yet, state your assumed/propagated activity explicitly and revisit it later.

Command Checks & Actions

ICC2report_power_domains

Confirms which power domains and switches are actually defined from UPF, independent of any activity file -- showing that power-domain structure and activity data are two separate inputs.

ICC2check_mv_design

The design-legality check that succeeds with or without an activity file, demonstrating that VCD/SAIF data is for power analysis accuracy, not for placement or multivoltage legality.

Common Mistake

The Trap: Candidates often mistakenly claiming that a VCD automatically guarantees accurate power, or reporting annotation percentage without checking the simulation interval.

Follow-up Question & Model Response

"What would you inspect when power drops sharply after a netlist change?"

Candidate Model Response: Check activity mapping and defaults before concluding that the implementation improved.

Practical Example

Tapeout Scenario: A multiplier exercised once during a long idle simulation appears quiet in an averaged activity summary. That summary is unsuitable for estimating the power of continuous multiply operations without explaining the workload difference.
