What is MMMC, and why can't one timing run tell the whole story?

From PDVerse MMMC Interview Masterclass, part of the pdVerse Mentor Series

Direct answer

MMMC (Multi-Mode Multi-Corner) is the industry standard methodology for verifying static timing across every combination of what the chip is doing (operational mode) and what condition the silicon is in (physical PVT and RC corner). You sign off a chip only once every single combination passes timing cleanly.

Mentor explanation

MMMC is the industry's answer to a simple problem: a chip has to work correctly no matter what it's doing or what shape the silicon came out of the fab in. So instead of running static timing analysis (STA) once, you run it across every combination of operational mode and physical condition.

Key terms

  • Mode โ€” a behavioral state of the chip (functional, scan-shift, scan-capture, BIST, low-power standby). Same silicon, different active clocks and timing constraints.
  • Corner โ€” a physical and environmental condition: process (SS/TT/FF), voltage, temperature (PVT), plus the RC extraction corner for wire parasitics.
  • Scenario / Analysis view โ€” one specific mode paired with one specific corner; this is the actual unit STA runs against.
  • Setup check โ€” did data arrive before the next clock edge? Typically worst at slow, hot, low-voltage, high-RC conditions.
  • Hold check โ€” did data not arrive too early? Typically worst at fast, cold, high-voltage, low-RC conditions.

Think of it as a grid: rows are modes, columns are corners, and every cell in that grid is a scenario the design has to pass. Skip a row or column and you've left a hole in coverage โ€” a path that never got checked under the one condition that would have broken it. That's exactly how chips escape into hold failures or setup failures in the field despite "clean" reports.

Practical example

Real-World Analysis Matrix Example:

# In Cadence Innovus / Tempus: Creating views combining Modes and Corners
create_analysis_view -name func_ss_125c_rcmax -constraint_mode cm_func -delay_corner dc_ss_125c_rcmax
create_analysis_view -name func_ff_m40c_rcmin -constraint_mode cm_func -delay_corner dc_ff_m40c_rcmin
create_analysis_view -name scan_ss_125c_rcmax -constraint_mode cm_scan -delay_corner dc_ss_125c_rcmax
create_analysis_view -name scan_ff_m40c_rcmin -constraint_mode cm_scan -delay_corner dc_ff_m40c_rcmin

Interview trap

Saying "we ran STA and it's clean" without naming which modes and corners were actually active. A senior engineer always states the scope โ€” e.g., "clean across functional, scan-shift, and capture modes, at both SS/125ยฐC/RCmax and FF/-40ยฐC/RCmin."

Key takeaways

  • MMMC evaluates the matrix of Operational Modes (what the chip is doing) multiplied by Physical Corners (environmental and process conditions).
  • Setup checks are typically constrained by Late/Slow corners (SSG, low Vdd, high temp, RCmax); Hold checks are constrained by Early/Fast corners (FFG, high Vdd, low temp, RCmin).
  • All active views must be optimized simultaneously to prevent fixing one corner from breaking another.
Self-check: can you answer this aloud?

Try a 45-second answer using this structure:

  1. State the direct answer.
  2. Explain the timing or physical reason.
  3. Name one caveat.
  4. Say how you would verify it in a real flow.
